Jehohanan 1 .   1 Chronicles 26:3 a Korahite doorkeeper. 2.   2 Chronicles 17:15 one of Jehoshaphat’s five captains. 3.  Ezra 10:6 ( Jonas ,   Esther 9:1  Esther 9:1; Johanan ,   Nehemiah 12:22-23; Jonathan ,   Nehemiah 12:11 ) high priest. He is called son of Eliashib in   Ezra 10:6 ,   Nehemiah 12:23 , but was probably his grandson, Joiada being his father (  Nehemiah 12:11;   Nehemiah 12:22 ). 4.  Ezra 10:28 (= Joannes , 1E  Esther 9:29 ), one of those who had taken ‘strange’ wives. 5.  Nehemiah 6:18  Nehemiah 6:18 son of Tobiah the Ammonite. 6.   Nehemiah 12:13 a priest in the days of Joiakim. 7.   Nehemiah 12:42 a priest present at the dedication of the walls.

Jeho'hanan. (Whom Jehovah Gave). A name of which John is the contraction.

1. A Korhite Levite, one of the doorkeepers to the Tabernacle.  1 Chronicles 26:3. Compare  1 Chronicles 25:1. (B.C. 1014).

2. One of the principal men of Judah, under King Jehoshaphat.  2 Chronicles 17:15. Compare  2 Chronicles 17:13 and  2 Chronicles 17:19. (B.C. 910).

3. Father of Ishmael, one of the "captains of hundreds," whom Jehoiada, the priest, took into his confidence, about the restoration of the line of Judah.  2 Chronicles 23:1. (B.C. 910).

4. One of the Bene-Bebai, (that is, sons of Bebai), who was forced to put away his foreign wife.  Ezra 10:28. (B.C. 459).

5. A priest,  Nehemiah 12:13, during the high priesthood of Joiakim.  Nehemiah 12:12. (B.C. 406).

6. A priest, who took part in the dedication of the wall of Jerusalem.  Nehemiah 12:42. (B.C. 446).

1.  1 Chronicles 26:1, margin 3; of the sons of Ebiasaph (not Asaph, who was a Gershonite not Kohathite).

2. The captain of 280,000 in and about Jerusalem under Jehoshaphat ( 2 Chronicles 17:13;  2 Chronicles 17:15;  2 Chronicles 17:19). Probably the same as the father of Ishmael, the captain who helped Jehoiada against Athaliah ( 2 Chronicles 23:1).

    (Heb. Yehochanan', יְחֹוֹחָנָן Jehovah-Granted , q.d. Θεοδῶρος ), the name of several men. (See Johanan); (See John), etc.

    1. (Sept. Ι᾿Ωνάν ) A Korhite and head of the sixth division of Levitical Temple porters ( 1 Chronicles 26:3). B.C. 1014.

    2. (Sept. Ι᾿Ωανάν ) Jehoshaphat's second "captain," in command of 280,000 (?) men ( 2 Chronicles 17:15); probably the same whose son Ishmael supported Jehoiada in his restoration of prince Jehoash ( 2 Chronicles 23:1). B.C. cir. 910.

    3. (Sept. Ι᾿Ωανάν , Auth. Vers. "Johanan.") The father of Azariah, which latter was one of the Ephraimite chiefs who insisted upon the return of the captives from the rival kingdom ( 2 Chronicles 28:12). B.C. ante 738.

    4. (Sept. Ι᾿Ωανάν , A. Vers. "Johanan.") A priest, the "son" of Eliashib, into whose chamber Ezra retired to bewail the profligacy of his countrymen in marrying Gentile wives ( Ezra 10:6); doubtless the same elsewhere called JOHANAN in the original ( Nehemiah 12:22-23) and perhaps identical with No. 7 below.

    5. (Sept. Ι᾿Ωανάν ) One of the "sons" of Bebai, who divorced his Gentile wife after the Babylonian exile ( Ezra 10:28). B.C. 459.

    6. (Sept. Ι᾿Ωνάθαν v.r. Ι᾿Ωνάν , Auth. Vers. "Johanan.") Son of Tobiah, the Samaritan enemy of the Jews; and son-in-law of Meshullam ( Nehemiah 6:18). B.C. 446.

    7. (Sept. Ι᾿Ωνάν ) One of the priests who celebrated with music the reparation of the walls of Jerusalem ( Nehemiah 12:42). B.C. 446. He was perhaps the same with No. 4 or No. 8.

    8. (Sept. Ι᾿Ωανάν ) A leading priest, the "son" of Amariah and contemporary with Joiakim ( Nehemiah 12:13). B.C. cir. 406. He may have been identical with the preceding.

    - hō̇ - hā´nan ( יהוחנן , yehōḥānān , "Yahweh is (or has been) gracious"):

    (1) A K orahite doorkeeper in David's reign, "son" of Meshelemiah ( 1 Chronicles 26:3 ). Septuagint, Luc, has "Jehonathan."

    (2) One of the five captains over King Jehoshaphat's army ( 2 Chronicles 17:15 ), probably father of Ishmael, "son of Jehohanan" ( 2 Chronicles 23:1 ).

    (3)  Ezra 10:6 (the King James Version has "Johnnan") = "Johanan" of   Nehemiah 12:22 ,  Nehemiah 12:23 = "Jonathan" of   Nehemiah 12:11 , "son" of Eliashib ( Ezra 10:6; but "grandson" in  Nehemiah 12:11 ). He was high priest in Ezra's time = "Jonas" in 1 Esdras 9:1 (the King James Version "Joanan").

    (4) One of those who had married foreign wives ( Ezra 10:28 ) = "Joannes" the Revised Version (British and American), "Johannes" the King James Version (1 Esdras 9:29).

    (5) Son of Tobiah, the Ammonite, Nehemiah's opponent ( Nehemiah 6:18 , the King James Version "Johanan").

    (6) Head of the priestly family of Amariah ( Nehemiah 12:13 ).

    (7) A priest present at the dedication of the walls of Jerusalem ( Nehemiah 12:42 ).

    (8) The name in the Hebrew of  2 Chronicles 28:12 . See Johanan , (7).
