Pedaiah was natural father of Zerubbabel ( 1 Chronicles 3:18-19). Shealtiel dying without male issue, Pedaiah by the Levirate law married his brother's widow ( Deuteronomy 25:5-10;  Matthew 22:24-28). Shealtiel was son of Jeconiah not by natural birth but by heritage only on his mother's side.  Luke 3:27;  Luke 3:31, makes Shealtiel son of Neri, a descendant of David, through Nathan not Solomon; probably Jeconiah, (besides the Zedekiah in  1 Chronicles 3:16 who died childless), had another son, Assir, who left only a daughter, who, according to the law as to heiresses ( Numbers 27:8;  Numbers 36:8-9), married a man of her paternal tribe, namely, Neri, of David's family in Nathan's line. From this marriage sprang Shealtiel, Malchiram, and the other "sons," i.e. grandsons, of Jeconiah in  1 Chronicles 3:17-18.

SHEALTIEL (Salathiel of   Esther 5:5  Esther 5:5; 1Es 5:48; 1Es 5:56;   Esther 6:2  Esther 6:2 , AV [Note: Authorized Version.] of   Matthew 1:12 and   Luke 3:27 ). The father of Zerubbabel (  Ezra 3:2;   Ezra 3:6;   Ezra 5:2 ,   Nehemiah 12:1 ,   Haggai 1:1;   Haggai 1:12;   Haggai 1:14;   Haggai 2:2;   Haggai 2:23 ). According to   1 Chronicles 3:17 , Shealtiel was the eldest son of king Jeconiah. In   1 Chronicles 3:10 the MT [Note: Massoretic Text.] makes Pedaiah (a brother of Shealtiel) the father of Zerubbabel.

Shealtiel', שְׁאִלְתַּיאֵל , Asked Of God ; Anglicized thus in the A.V. at  Ezra 3:2;  Ezra 3:8;  Ezra 5:2;  Nehemiah 12:1;  Haggai 1:1; but "Salathiel" at  1 Chronicles 3:17; also in the contracted form Shaltiel ' , שַׁלְתַּיאֵל , "Shealtiel,"  Haggai 1:12;  Haggai 1:14;  Haggai 2:2; Sept., Apocrypha, Josephus, and N. Test., Σαλαθιήλ ; "Salathiel,"  1 Esdras 5:5;  1 Esdras 5:48;  1 Esdras 5:56;  1 Esdras 6:2;  2 Esdras 5:16;  Matthew 1:12;  Luke 3:27), the son of Jechoniah, or Jehoiachin, king of Judah, and father of Zorobabel, according to  Matthew 1:12, but son of Neri (Neriah) and father of Zorobabel (Zerubbabel) according to  Luke 3:27; while the genealogy in  1 Chronicles 3:17-19 leaves it doubtful whether he is the son of Assir or Jechoniah, and makes Zerubbabel his nephew. The truth seems to be that he was the son of the captive prince Jechoniah, or Jehoiachin (for the prophecy in  Jeremiah 22:30 seems only to mean that he should have no successor on the throne), by a daughter of Neri, or Neriah, of the private line of David; and that having himself no heir, he adopted his nephew Zerubbabel, or perhaps was the father of this last by his deceased brother's widow. shḗ - ol´ti - el ( שׁאלתּיאל , she'altı̄'ēl , but in   Haggai 1:12 ,  Haggai 1:14;  Haggai 2:2 , שׁלתּיאל , shaltı̄'ēl  ; Septuagint and the New Testament always Σαλαθιήλ , Salathiḗl , hence, "Salathiel" of 1 Esdras 5:5, 48, 56; 6:2; the King James Version of  Matthew 1:12;  Luke 3:27 ): Father of Zerubbabel ( Ezra 3:2 ,  Ezra 3:8;  Ezra 5:2;  Nehemiah 12:1;  Haggai 1:1 ,  Haggai 1:12 ,  Haggai 1:14;  Haggai 2:2 ,  Haggai 2:23 ). But, according to  1 Chronicles 3:17 , Shealtiel was the oldest son of King Jeconiah; in  1 Chronicles 3:19 the Massoretic Text makes Pedaiah, a brother of Shealtiel, the father of Zerubbabel (compare Curtis, ICC ).
