Amminadab

Fausset's Bible Dictionary [1]

("of the people of the prince"; else, "my people is willing".)

1.  Song of Solomon 6:12; "My soul made me like the chariots of Amminadib," one noted for swift driving; compare  Song of Solomon 1:9. Rather: "My soul made me like the chariots of my willing people" ( Psalms 110:3), or else, "of the Prince of My people," Messiah. His chariots are His glorious angel escort.

2.  Numbers 1:7;  Numbers 2:3. Ancestor of David and Jesus ( Matthew 1:4;  Luke 3:3;  Numbers 1:7;  Numbers 2:3;  Ruth 4:19-20;  1 Chronicles 2:10). As Naasson, Amminadab's son, was prince at the first numbering of Israel in the second year from the Exodus, Amminadab probably died in Egypt before the Exodus, at the time of Israel's heaviest oppression. His daughter Elisheba married Aaron, and bore Nadab (named from Amminadab), Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar; the earliest alliance of the kingly line of Judah and the priestly line of Aaron.

3. Chief of Uzziel's 112 sons, whom David sent for to bring the ark to Jerusalem ( 1 Chronicles 15:10-12).  1 Chronicles 15:4. = Izhar, son of Kohath, father of Korah ( 1 Chronicles 6:22; compare  1 Chronicles 6:2;  1 Chronicles 6:18).

People's Dictionary of the Bible [2]

Amminadab ( Am-Mĭ N'A-Dăb ), Kindred Of The Prince. 1. The son of Ram or Aram, who was great-grandson of Judah. His daughter, Elisheba, was the wife of Aaron; and his son Naashon, or Nahshon, prince of Judah in the wilderness.  Exodus 6:23;  Numbers 1:7;  Numbers 2:3;  Numbers 7:12;  Numbers 7:17;  Numbers 10:14;  Ruth 4:19-20;  1 Chronicles 2:10. 2. A son of Kohath.  1 Chronicles 6:22. This is possibly a transcriber's error, as elsewhere generally,  Exodus 6:18;  1 Chronicles 6:2;  1 Chronicles 6:18, he is called Izhar. 3. The chief in David's time of the sons of Uzziel, a Levite, son of Kohath.  1 Chronicles 15:10-11.

Smith's Bible Dictionary [3]

3. In  1 Chronicles 6:22, Izhar, the son of Kohath, is called Amminadib ; probably a clerical error.

(Hebrew Amminadab', עִמַּינָדָב , Kindred Of the Prince, Gesen.; Man Of Generosity, Furst, who ascribes to עִם the sense "homo" as its primitive meaning; the passages,  Psalms 110:3;  Song of Solomon 6:12, margin, seem, however, rather to suggest the sense My People is Willing; Sept. and New Test. Ἀμιναδάβ , but in  Exodus 6:23, Ἀμειναδάβ ) , the name of three men. (See Amminadib).

    1. The father of Nahshon, which latter was phylarch of the tribe of Judah at the time of the Exode ( Numbers 1:7;  Numbers 2:3;  Numbers 7:12;  Numbers 7:17;  Numbers 10:14). B.C. ante 1658. a - min´a - dab ( עמּינדב , ‛ammı̄nādhābh = "my people (or my kinsman) is generous or noble"): three persons bearing this name are mentioned in the Old Testament.

    (1) In Rth 4:19, Rth 4:20 and  1 Chronicles 2:10 Amminadab is referred to as one of David's ancestors. He was the great-grandson of Perez, a son of Judah (  Genesis 38:29;  Genesis 46:12 ) and the great-grandfather of Boaz, who again was the great-grandfather of David. Aaron's wife, Elisheba, was a daughter of Amminadab ( Exodus 6:23 ), while one of the sons, namely, Nahshon, occupied an important position in the Judah-clan ( Numbers 1:7;  Numbers 2:3;  Numbers 7:12;  Numbers 10:14 ).

    (2) In the first Book of Chronicles ( 1 Chronicles 6:22 ) Amminadab is mentioned as a son of Kohath (and therefore a grandson of Levi) and the father of Korah. But in other genealogical passages ( Exodus 6:18;  Numbers 3:19;  1 Chronicles 6:2 ) the sons of Kohath are Amram, Izhar, Hebron and Uzziel, and in two places ( Exodus 6:21;  1 Chronicles 6:38 ) Izhar is mentioned as the father of Korah.

    (3) According to 1 Ch ( 1 Chronicles 15:10 ,  1 Chronicles 15:11 ) Amminadab was the name of a priest who took part in the removal of the ark to Jerusalem. He was the son of Uzziel, and therefore a nephew of Amminadab, son of Kohath (= Izhar).
