LIBNI. The eldest son of Gershon, that is to say, the eponym of a principal family of Gershonite Levites, Exodus 6:17 , Numbers 3:18 , 1 Chronicles 6:17; 1 Chronicles 6:20 . In 1 Chronicles 6:29 [Heb. 14], perhaps owing to some dislocation of the text, the name appears as that of the eponym of a family of Merarites. The patronymic Libnites occurs in Numbers 3:21; Numbers 26:58 . Cf. Ladan.
Morrish Bible Dictionary [6]
1. Son of Gershon, the son of Levi. Exodus 6:17; Numbers 3:18; 1 Chronicles 6:17,20 .
2. Son of Mahli, and grandson of Merari. 1 Chronicles 6:29 .
Smith's Bible Dictionary [7]
Lib'ni. (white).
1. The eldest son, of Gershon, the son of Levi, Exodus 6:17; Numbers 3:18; 1 Chronicles 6:17; 1 Chronicles 6:20, and ancestor of the family, of the Libnites. (B.C. after 1700).
2. The son of Mahli or Mahali, son of Merari, 1 Chronicles 6:29, as the text at present stands. It is probable, however, that he is the same as the preceding, and that something has been omitted. Compare 1 Chronicles 6:29 with 1 Chronicles 6:20; 1 Chronicles 6:42.

(Heb. Libni', לבְנַי , white; Sept. Λοβενεί, Λοβενί ), the first-named of the two sons of Gershon, the son of Levi (Exodus 6:17; Numbers 3:18; Numbers 3:21; 1 Chronicles 6:17; comp. Numbers 26:58); elsewhere called LAADAN (1 Chronicles 23:7; 1 Chronicles 26:21). B.C. post. 1856. His son is called Jahath (1 Chronicles 6:20; 1 Chronicles 6:43), and his descendants were named LIBNITES (Numbers 3:21; Numbers 26:58). In 1 Chronicles 6:29, by some error he is called the son of Mahli and the father of Shimei.
