(Heb. Shamhuth', שִׁמְהוּת , prob. Desolation ; Sept. Σαμαώθ v.r. Σαλαώθ ; Vulg. Samaoth ) , the fifth captain for the fifth month in David's arrangement of his army ( 1 Chronicles 27:8). B.C. 1020. His designation הִיַּזְרָח , hay-yizrach, i.e. the Yizrach, is perhaps for הִזִּרְחַי , Haz-Zarchi, the Zarhite, or descendant of Zerah, the son of Judah. From a comparison of the lists in 1 Chronicles 11:27, it would seem that Shamhuth is the same as Shammoth (q.v.) the Harorite.
