In the social and family order that God has set out for human society, men and women have complementary roles. Though equal in status before God ( Genesis 1:27; Galatians 3:28; 1 Peter 3:7), they are different in body and personality, so that each is suited in different ways to deal with different needs and responsibilities.
The basic unit of human society is the family, and the ultimate responsibility for the family’s well-being rests with the man. As husband he must care for his wife, and as father he must care for his children. In relation to his wife he must treat her as an equal ( Ephesians 5:25; Ephesians 5:28; 1 Peter 3:7; see Husband ), and in relation to his children he must bring them up with love, firmness and understanding ( Ephesians 6:4; Colossians 3:21; see Family ).
Sexual passion is usually stronger in men than in women, and for this reason the Bible gives special warnings to men concerning sexual temptations ( Proverbs 7:6-23; Hosea 4:14; Matthew 5:28; 1 Thessalonians 4:4-5; 2 Timothy 2:22; Titus 2:6; see Adultery ; Fornication ; Prostitution ). Older men are to be an example to younger men in demonstrating the worth of a life of self-control ( Titus 2:2).
In the church both men and women have their special responsibilities ( 1 Timothy 2:12-15; see Women ). Again men are warned not to misuse their position, and in particular not to talk and act in a way that is boastful or arrogant ( 1 Timothy 2:8). No matter what their position, whether in the church, the family or society, they are accountable to God. And the greater the responsibility, the stricter will be the judgment ( 1 Corinthians 11:3; Ephesians 6:9; James 3:1).
