1. Son of Esau, by Aholiabamah, the daughter of Anah, the son of Zebeon, the Hivite.  Genesis 36:6;  Genesis 36:14;  Genesis 36:18;  1 Chronicles 1:35. (B.C. after 1797).

2. A Benjamite, son of Bilhah.  1 Chronicles 7:10-11.

3. A Gershonite Levite, of the house of Shimei.  1 Chronicles 23:10-11. (B.C. 1014).

4. Son of Rehoboam, king of Judah.  2 Chronicles 11:18-19. (B.C. after 97).

    (Hebrew Yeush', יְעוּשׁ , Assembler; written יְעַישׁ , Yeish ' , in the text of  Genesis 36:5;  Genesis 36:14;  1 Chronicles 7:10), the name of several men.

    1. (Sept. Ι᾿Εούς , but Ι᾿Εούλ , in  1 Chronicles 1:35; Vulg. Jehus ) . The oldest of the three sons of Esau by Aholibamah, the daughter of Anah, born in Canaan, but afterwards a sheik of the Edomites ( Genesis 36:5;  Genesis 36:14;  Genesis 36:18;  1 Chronicles 1:35). B.C. post 1964.

    2. (Sept. Ι᾿Εώς v.r. Ι᾿Αούς , Vulg. Jehus. ) The first named of the sons of Bilhan, grandson of Benjamin ( 1 Chronicles 7:10). B.C. considerably post 1856.

    3. (Sept. Ι᾿Ωάς , Vulg. Jaus. ) A Levite, one of the four sons of Shimei; not having many sons, he was reckoned with his brother Beriah as the third branch of the family ( 1 Chronicles 23:10-11). B.C. 1014.

    4. (Sept. Ι᾿Εούς , Vulg. Jehus. ) One of the three sons of Rehoboam, apparently by Abihail, his second wife ( 2 Chronicles 11:19). B.C. post 973.

    5. (Sept. Ι᾿Διάς v.r. Ι᾿Άς , Vulg. Jehus, A. Vers. "Jehush.") The second son of Eshek, brother of Azel, of the descendants of Saul ( 1 Chronicles 8:39). B.C. cir. 588.

    jē´ush ( יעוּשׁ , ye‛ūsh , probably "he protects," "he comes to help"; see Hpn , 109; Kethibh is יעישׁ , ye‛ı̄sh , in   Genesis 36:5 ,  Genesis 36:14;  1 Chronicles 7:10 ):

    (1) A "son" of Esau ( Genesis 36:5 ,  Genesis 36:14 ,  Genesis 36:18;  1 Chronicles 1:35 ). "The name is thought by some to be identical with that, of an Arabian lion-god Yaġuṯ ..., meaning 'helper,' whose antiquity is vouched for by inscriptions of Thamud" (Skinner, Gen , 432).

    (2) A B enjamite ( 1 Chronicles 7:10 ), but probably a Zebulunite. See Curtis, Chronicles, 145 ff.

    (3) A descendant of King Saul, the King James Version "Jehush" ( 1 Chronicles 8:39 ).

    (4) A G ershonite Levite ( 1 Chronicles 23:10 ,  1 Chronicles 23:11 ).

    (5) A son of King Rehoboam ( 2 Chronicles 11:19 ).
