Ja'rib. (Adversary).

1. Named in the list of  1 Chronicles 4:24, only, as a son of Simeon. Perhaps, the same as Jachin . Genesis 46; Exodus 6; Numbers 26.

2. One of the "chief men," who accompanied Ezra on his journey, from Babylon to Jerusalem.  Ezra 8:16. (B.C. 469).

3. A priest, of the house of Jeshua, the son of Jozadak, who had married a foreign wife, and was compelled by Ezra to put her away.  Ezra 10:18. (B.C. 459).

4.  1 Maccabees 14:29. A contraction or corruption of the name Joarib .  1 Maccabees 2:1.

Jarib 1. The eponym of a Simeonite family (  1 Chronicles 4:24 = Jachin of   Genesis 46:10 ,   Exodus 6:15 ,   Numbers 26:12 ). 2. One of the ‘chief men’ who were sent by Ezra to Casiphia in search of Levites (  Ezra 8:16 ); called in 1Es 8:44 Joribus . 3. A priest who had married a foreign wife (  Ezra 10:18 ); called in 1E  Esther 9:19 Joribus.

    1. A son of Simeon ( 1 Chronicles 4:24); elsewhere ( Genesis 46:10, etc.) called JACHIN (See Jachin) (q.v.).

    2. One of the popular chiefs dispatched by Ezra to,.procure the company of priests in the return to Jerusalem ( Ezra 8:16). B.C. 459.

    3. One of the priests of the kindred' of Jeshua that divorced their Gentile wives after the Exile ( Ezra 10:18). B.C. 459.

    4. A Graecized or corrupt form ( 1 Maccabees 14:29; compare  2 Maccabees 2:1) of JOARIB (See Joarib) (q.v.).

    jā´rib , jar´ib ( יריב , yārı̄bh , "he contends," or "takes (our) part," or "conducts (our) case"):

    (1) In  1 Chronicles 4:24 , a "son" (clan) of Simeon = "Jachin" of  Genesis 46:10;  Exodus 6:15;  Numbers 26:12 .

    (2)In  Ezra 8:16 , one of the "chief men" for whom Ezra sent, and dispatched by him to Casiphia to fetch ministers for God's house = "Joribus" (1 Esdras 8:44).

    (3) In  Ezra 10:18 , a priest who had married a foreign wife = "Joribus" (1 Esdras 9:19).
