Hanan 1. One of the Levites who assisted Ezra in reading and explaining the Law to the people (  Nehemiah 8:7; in 1Es 9:48 Ananias ); probably the same as the signatory to the covenant (  Nehemiah 10:10 ). 2. The son of Zaccur the son of Mattaniah, one of the four treasurers appointed by Neh. over the storehouses in which the tithes were kept (  Nehemiah 13:13 ). 3. A Benjamite chief (  1 Chronicles 8:23 ). 4. The youngest son of Azel, a descendant of Saul (  1 Chronicles 8:38 =   1 Chronicles 9:44 ). 5. One of David’s mighty men (  1 Chronicles 11:43 ). 6. The son of Igdaliah. His sons had a chamber in the Temple (  Jeremiah 35:4 ). 7. The head of a family of Nethinim who returned with Zerub. (  Ezra 2:46 ,   Nehemiah 7:49 ); called Anan in 1Es 5:30 .   Esther 5:8 .   Esther 5:9 . Two of ‘the chiefs of the people’ who sealed the covenant (  Nehemiah 10:22;   Nehemiah 10:26 ).

Ha'nan. (Merciful).

1. One of the chief people, of the tribe of Benjamin.  1 Chronicles 8:23.

2. The last of the six sons of Azel, a descendant of Saul.  1 Chronicles 8:38;  1 Chronicles 9:44. (B.C. 588).

3. "Son of Maachah," that is, possibly a Syrian of Aram-maachah, one of the heroes of David's guard.  1 Chronicles 11:43. (B.C. 1046).

4. The sons of Hanan were among the Nethinim, who returned from Babylon with Zerubbabel.  Ezra 2:46;  Nehemiah 7:49. (B.C. 536).

5. One of the Levites, who assisted Ezra in his public exposition of the law.  Nehemiah 8:7. (B.C. 446). The same person is probably mentioned in  Nehemiah 10:10.

6. One of the "heads" of "the people," who also sealed the covenant.  Nehemiah 10:22. (B.C. 410).

7. Another of the chief laymen, on the same occasion.  Nehemiah 10:26.

8. Son of Zaccur, son of Mattaniah, whom Nehemiah made one of the store. Keepers of the provisions collected as tithes.  Nehemiah 13:13.

9. Son of Igdaliah.  Jeremiah 35:4. (B.C. 410).

    (Heb. Chanan', חָנָן , Merciful, or perh. rather an abbreviation of ווֹחָנָן , later John [ (See Ananias); (See Hanani), etc.]; Sept. Ἀναν , but in  Jeremiah 35:4 Ἀνανίας ), the name of at least seven men. See Baal- Hanan; (See Ben-Hanan); (See Elon-Beth-Hanan).

    1. One of the sons (or descendants) of Shashak, a chief of the tribe of Benjamin resident at Jerusalem ( 1 Chronicles 8:23). B.C. apparently between 1612 and 1093.

    2. Son of Maachah, and one of David's heroes ( 1 Chronicles 11:43). B.C. 1046.

    3. Father of Igdaliah, "a man of God;" in the chamber of his sons Jeremiah tested the fidelity of the Rechabites ( Jeremiah 35:4). B.C. ante 606.

    4. The last named of the six sons of Azel the Benjamite ( 1 Chronicles 8:38;  1 Chronicles 9:44). B.C. cir. 588. 5. One of the Nethinim whose family returned from the captivity with Zerubbabel (Ezra 2, 46;  Nehemiah 7:49). B.C. ante 536.

    6. One of the Levites who assisted Ezra in expounding the law to the people ( Nehemiah 8:7; comp. 9:4, 5). He also subscribed the sacred covenant with Nehemiah ( Nehemiah 10:10). From  Nehemiah 13:13, it appears that he was the son of Zaccur, and, on account of his integrity, he was one of those appointed to distribute the Levitical revenues among his brethren.     7. One of the chiefs of the people who subscribed the solemn covenant drawn up by Nehemiah ( Nehemiah 10:22). In  Nehemiah 10:26 his name appears to be repeated in the same list. B.C. cir. 410.

    (3) One of David's mighty men of valor ( 1 Chronicles 11:43 ).

    (4) The head of a family of the Nethinim who returned with Zerubbabel ( Ezra 2:46;  Nehemiah 7:49 ).

    (5) An assistant of Ezra in expounding the law ( Nehemiah 8:7 ). Possibly the same person is referred to in  Nehemiah 10:10 (11).

    (6) One of the four treasurers put in charge of the tithes by Nehemiah ( Nehemiah 13:13 ).

    (7,8) Two who "sealed the covenant" on the eve of the restoration ( Nehemiah 10:22 (23),26 (27)).

    (9) A son of Igdaliah, "the man of God," whose sons had a chamber in the temple at Jerusalem ( Jeremiah 35:4 ).
