Frederick Augustus Porter Barnard S.T.D. [1]
an Episcopalian educator, was born in Sheffield, Massachusetts, May 5, 1809. Graduating from Yale College in 1828, he became tutor there in 1830; a teacher in asylums for the deaf and dumb, 1831-37; professor in the University of Alabama, 1837-54; professor in the University of Mississippi, 1854-56; president of the same, 1856-58; chancellor, 1858-61. He was in charge of the chart printing of the U.S. Coast Survey, 1863-64. In May 1864, he became president of Columbia College, which position he held until his death, April 27, 1889.
