Elishama . 1. A prince of the tribe of Ephraim at the census in the wilderness, son of Ammihud and grandfather of Joshua (  Numbers 1:10;   Numbers 2:18 ,   1 Chronicles 7:26 ). 2. One of David’s sons, born in Jerusalem (  2 Samuel 5:16 ,   1 Chronicles 3:8;   1 Chronicles 14:7 ). 3. In   1 Chronicles 3:6 by mistake for Elishua of   2 Samuel 5:15 ,   1 Chronicles 14:5 .   1 Chronicles 14:4 . A descendant of Judah, son of Jekamiah (  1 Chronicles 2:41 ). 5. The father of Nethaniah, and grandfather of Ishmael, ‘of the seed royal,’ who killed Gedaliah at the time of the Exile (  2 Kings 25:25 ,   Jeremiah 41:1 ). Jerome, following Jewish tradition identifies him with No. 4. 6. A scribe or secretary to Jehoiakim (  Jeremiah 36:12;   Jeremiah 36:20-21 ). 7. A priest sent by Jehoshaphat to teach the Law in the cities of Judah (  2 Chronicles 17:8 ).

Elish'ama. (Whom God Hears).

1. The "prince" or "captain," of the tribe of Ephraim, in the wilderness of Sinai.  Numbers 1:10;  Numbers 2:18;  Numbers 7:48;  Numbers 10:22. (B.C. 1491). From  1 Chronicles 7:26, we find that he was grandfather to the great Joshua.

2. A son of King David.  1 Samuel 5:16;  1 Chronicles 3:8;  1 Chronicles 14:7.

3. Another son of David,  1 Chronicles 3:6, who in the other lists is called Elishua . (B.C. After 1044).

4. A descendant of Judah.  1 Chronicles 2:41.

5. The father of Nethaniah and grandfather of Ishmael.  2 Kings 25:25;  Jeremiah 41:1.

6. Scribe of King Jehoiakim.  Jeremiah 36:12;  Jeremiah 36:20-21. (B.C. 605).

7. A priest, in the time of Jehoshaphat.  2 Chronicles 17:8. (B.C. 912).

(Hebrew Elishama', אלִֵישָׁמָ , whom God Has Heard), the name of several men.

1. (Sept. Ε᾿Λισαμά v.r. in Chron. Ε᾿Λισαμαϊ v . ) Son of Ammihud, and "prince" or "captain" (both נָשִׂיא , i.e., phylarch) of the tribe of Ephraim at the Exode ( Numbers 1:10;  Numbers 2:18;  Numbers 7:48;  Numbers 7:53;  Numbers 10:22). B.C. 1658. From the genealogy in  1 Chronicles 7:26, we find that he was the grandfather of  Joshua 2:1-24 . (Sept. Ε᾿Λισαμά v.r. Ε᾿Λισά .) The second of the nine sons of David born at Jerusalem, exclusive of those by Bathsheba ( 1 Chronicles 3:6); called in the parallel passages ( 2 Samuel 5:15;  1 Chronicles 14:5) by apparently the more correct name ELISHUA (See Elishua) (q.v.).

3. (Sept. Ε᾿Λισαμά .) The seventh of the same series of sons ( 2 Samuel 5:16;  1 Chronicles 3:8;  1 Chronicles 14:7); being one of the thirteen, or, according to the record of Samuel, the eleven, sons born to David of his wives after his establishment in Jerusalem. B.C. post 1044. The list in Josephus (Ant. 7:3, 3) has no similar name. (See David).

4. (Sept. Ε᾿Λισαμά .) One of the two priests sent by Jehoshaphat with the Levites to teach the Law through the cities of Judah ( 2 Chronicles 17:8). B.C. 912.

5. (Sept. Ε᾿Λισαμά᾿ .) Son of Jekamiah, a descendant of Judah ( 1 Chronicles 2:41). In the Jewish traditions preserved by Jerome (Qu. Hebr. on  1 Chronicles 2:41) he appears to be identified with

6. (Sept. Ελισαμά v.r. in Jeremiah Ε᾿Λασά and Ε᾿Λεασά .) A member of the royal line of Judah; father of Nethaniah, and grandfather of Ishmael who slew Gedaliah, provisional governor of Jerusalem after its capture by the Babylonians ( 2 Kings 25:25;  Jeremiah 41:1). B.C. considerably ante 588.

7. (Sept. Ε᾿Λισαμά .) A royal scribe in whose chamber the roll of Jeremiah was read to him and other assembled magnates, and afterwards deposited for a time ( Jeremiah 36:12;  Jeremiah 36:20-21). B.C. 605.

(5) One "of the seed royal," grandfather of Ishmael, the slayer of Gedaliah ( 2 Kings 25:25;  Jeremiah 41:1 ).
