ABIEL . 1 . Father of Kish and Ner, and grandfather of Saul (  1 Samuel 9:1;   1 Samuel 14:51 ). The latter passage should run, ‘Kish, the father of Saul, and Ner the father of Abner, were sons of Abiel.’ 2 . One of David’s heroes (  1 Chronicles 11:32 ), from Beth-arabah in the wilderness of Judah (  Joshua 15:6;   Joshua 15:61;   Joshua 18:22 ). Abi-albon (  2 Samuel 23:31 ) is a transcriber’s error, the eye having fallen on albon below: some codices of the LXX [Note: Septuagint.] have Abiel  : possibly the original was Abibaal .

Fausset's Bible Dictionary

("father of strength".)

1. Father of Kish and of Ner; grandfather of Saul and of Abner, according to  1 Samuel 9:1;  1 Samuel 14:51. But Abiel seems to have had "Ner" as his second name ( 1 Chronicles 8:33;  1 Chronicles 9:35;  1 Chronicles 9:39, where Abiel is also called Jehiel and Saul is represented as his great grandson). Probably in 1 Samuel a link in the genealogy is omitted, as often elsewhere.

2.  1 Chronicles 11:32; named Abi-Albon (of the same meaning)  2 Samuel 23:31.

Morrish Bible Dictionary

1. Father of Kish and of Ner and grandfather of Saul and of Abner. That this is the most probable genealogy is confirmed by Ner being said to be Saul's uncle,  1 Samuel 9:1;  1 Samuel 14:50,51; though in  1 Chronicles 8:33;  1 Chronicles 9:39 , Saul is said to be the son of Kish, the son of Ner. This Ner may have been an earlier ancestor; and here Abiel is not named at all. It was not unusual to leave out many names in the genealogies.

2. One of David's mighty men,   1 Chronicles 11:32; he is called Abi-Albon in  2 Samuel 23:31 .

A'bi-el or Ab'i-el. (Father Of Strength, that is, Strong).

1. Father of Kish, and consequently grandfather of Saul,  1 Samuel 9:1, as well as of Abner, Saul's commander-in-chief.  1 Samuel 14:51. (B.C. 1093-1055).

2. One of David's mighty men.  1 Chronicles 11:32. In  2 Samuel 23:31, he is called Abi-Albon . (B.C. 1053).

Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological and Ecclesiastical Literature

(Heb. Abiel', אֲבַיאֵל lit. Father [i.e. Possessor] Of God, i.e. Pious, or perhaps father Of Strength, i.e. Strong; Sept. ‘Αβιήλ ) , the name of two men.

1. The son of Zeror, a Benjamite ( 1 Samuel 9:1), and father of Ner ( 1 Samuel 14:51), which last was the grandfather of Saul, the first king of Israel ( 1 Chronicles 8:33;  1 Chronicles 9:39). B.C. 1093. In  1 Samuel 9:1 he is called the "father" (q.v.) of Kish, meaning grandfather. (See Ner).

2. An Arbathite, one of David's distinguished warriors ( 1 Chronicles 11:32). B.C. 1053. In the parallel passage he is called ABI-ALBON (See Abi-Albon) ( 2 Samuel 23:31). (See David).

Abiel, 1

Ab´iel (Father of strength, i.e. strong), the father of Kish, whose son Saul was the first king of Israel, and of Ner, whose son Abner was captain of the host to his cousin Saul ( 1 Samuel 9:1;  1 Samuel 14:51).

Abiel, 2

Abiel, one of the thirty most distinguished men of David's army ( 1 Chronicles 11:32). He is called Abi-albon in  2 Samuel 23:31; a name which has precisely the same signification (father of strength) as the other.
