Ner

From BiblePortal Wikipedia

Fausset's Bible Dictionary [1]

Son of Jehiel, father of Kish, grandfather of Saul; also father of Ner, Saul's uncle ( 1 Chronicles 8:33;  1 Samuel 14:50). Kish in  1 Chronicles 9:35-36, is an elder Kish, brother of Ner; or else is enumerated with Jehiel's "sons" (though really his grandson), because he was head of a house of fathers. Gibeon was the family abode. Jehiel's wife Maachah seemingly was descendant of Caleb by Ephah his concubine, and heiress of the estate in Gibea or Gibeon ( 1 Chronicles 2:46;  1 Chronicles 2:48-49;  1 Chronicles 8:29;  1 Chronicles 9:35;  1 Chronicles 14:16; Lord A. Hervey in Smith's Bible Dictionary).

Morrish Bible Dictionary [2]

Son of Abiel, father of Abner, and Saul's uncle.  1 Samuel 14:50,51 . The genealogy here falls thus:

Abiel.

/

Kish. Ner.

| |

Saul. Abner.

This differs from the Chronicles, where Ner is the son of Jehiel of Gibeon, and the father of Kish, the father of Saul.  1 Chronicles 8:33;  1 Chronicles 9:36,39 . The rabbis say that this Ner is the same person as Abiel; but others suppose him to be some earlier ancestor not elsewhere mentioned.

Smith's Bible Dictionary [3]

Ner. (A Light Or Lamp). Son of Jehiel, according to  1 Chronicles 8:33, father of Abner, and grandfather of King Saul. (B.C. 1140). Abner was, therefore, uncle to Saul, as is expressly stated in  1 Samuel 14:50.

Hastings' Dictionary of the Bible [4]

(Heb. id. נֵר , Light; Sept. Νήρ ), a Benjamite, according to  1 Chronicles 8:33, father of Kish and Abner, and grandfather of king Saul. B.C. cir. 1140. Abner was, therefore, uncle to Saul, as is expressly stated in  1 Samuel 14:50. But some confusion has arisen from the statement in  1 Chronicles 9:36, that Kish and Ner were both sons of Jehiel, whence it has been concluded that they were brothers, and consequently that Abner and Saul were first cousins. The explanation of this, however, is that there was an elder Kish, uncle of Saul's father, or, rather, Ner's grandfather. (See Saul). "The name Ner, combined with that of his son Abner, may be compared with Nadab in  1 Chronicles 9:36, and Abinadab,  1 Chronicles 9:39; with Jesse,  1 Chronicles 2:13, and Abishai,  1 Chronicles 2:16; and with Juda,  Luke 3:26, and Abiud,  Matthew 1:13." Gesenius, misled by  1 Samuel 9:1, gives the following genealogy (Thesaur. page 9):

International Standard Bible Encyclopedia [10]

nẽr ( נר , nēr , "lamp"): Father of Abner (  1 Samuel 14:50 f;   1 Samuel 26:5 ,  1 Samuel 26:14 , etc.); grandfather of Saul ( 1 Chronicles 8:33 ).
