Graduating from Yale [[College]] in 1828, he became tutor there in 1830; a teacher in asylums for the deaf and dumb, 1831-37; professor in the University of Alabama, 1837-54; professor in the University of Mississippi, 1854-56; president of the same, 1856-58; chancellor, 1858-61. He was in charge of the chart printing of the U.S. [[Coast]] Survey, 1863-64. In May 1864, he became president of [[Columbia]] College, which position he held until his death, April 27, 1889.
