an Episcopalian educator, was born in Sheffield, Massachusetts, May 5, 1809. Graduating from Yale College in 1828, he became tutor there in 1830; a teacher in asylums for the deaf and dumb, 1831-37; professor in the University of Alabama, 1837-54; professor in the University of Mississippi, 1854-56; president of the same, 1856-58; chancellor, 1858-61.
