 Ezra 8:18;  Ezra 8:24. A Levite of the family of Mahli, son of Merari. One of the first ministers for the house of God who joined Ezra at the river Ahava. With Hashabiah, etc., he had charge of the vessels and gifts which the king, his lords, and all Israel, had offered. Sherebiah also assisted Ezra at the reading of the law, in making the people understand its sense ( Nehemiah 8:7). He took part in the confession and thanksgiving at the fast after the feast of tabernacles ( Nehemiah 9:4-5); and signed the covenant ( Nehemiah 10:12), and was over the psalmody ( Nehemiah 12:8;  Nehemiah 12:24).

SHEREBIAH . One of the Levites who joined Ezra (  Ezra 8:18;   Ezra 8:24 ,   Nehemiah 8:7;   Nehemiah 9:4;   Nehemiah 10:12 (13)   Nehemiah 12:8;   Nehemiah 12:24 ). The name appears in 1Es 8:47 as Asebebias , 1Es 8:54 Eserebias , and 1Es 9:48 Sarahias . Cf. Mahli.

A Levite who with his sons and brethren returned from exile: he assisted Ezra, sealed the covenant, and was a chief of the choir.  Ezra 8:18;  Nehemiah 8:7;  Nehemiah 9:4,5;  Nehemiah 10:12;  Nehemiah 12:8,24 . In  Ezra 8:24 apparently the same is called a priest.

sher - ḗ - bı̄´a , shḗ - reb´ya ( שׁרביה , shērēbhyah , "God has sent burning heat"(?); the form is doubtful): A post-exilic priest and family. Sherebiah, who joined Ezra at the river Ahava (  Ezra 8:18; the Septuagint omits), and had charge, along with eleven others, of the silver and gold and vessels for the Temple ( Ezra 8:24 , Codex Vaticanus and Codex Alexandrinus Σαραιά , Saraiá , Lucian, Σαραβίας , Sarabı́as ). He aided in the exposition of the Law ( Nehemiah 8:7 ), was among those who made public confession ( Nehemiah 9:4 ) and sealed the covenant ( Nehemiah 10:12 (13)). His name also appears in   Nehemiah 12:8 ,  Nehemiah 12:24 . In every passage listed above except  Nehemiah 10:12 (13), Codex Vaticanus and Codex Alexandrinus read Σαραβία , Sarabı́a , Lucian, Σαραβίας , Sarabı́as . In 1 Esdras 8:47 the name appears as "Asebebia," the Revised Version (British and American) "Asebebias"; in 1 Esdras 8:54, "Esebrias," the Revised Version (British and American) "Eserebias," and 1 Esdras 9:48, "Sarabias." Many of the companion-names on the lists are plainly ethnic (Cheyne).

(Heb. Sherebyah' שֵׁרֵבְיָה , Heat [Furst , Sprout ] Of Jehovah ; Sept.' Σαραβία , v.r. Σαραβίας , Σαραβαϊ v Α , Σαραϊ v Α , ettc.), a prominent Levite of the family of Mahli the Merarite, who, with his sons and brethren (eighteen all) joined Ezra's party of returning colonists at the river Ahava ( Ezra 8:18), and who, along with Hashabiah and ten others was commissioned to carry the treasures to Jerusalem ( Ezra 8:24, where they are vaguely called "chief of the priests"). B.C. 459. He also assisted Ezra in reading to the people (Nahum 8:7), took part in the psalm of confession and thanksgiving which; was sung at the solemn fast after the Feast of Tabernacles, (Nahum 9:4, 5), and signed, the covenant with, Nehemiah ( Nehemiah 10:12). He is again mentioned among the chief of the Levites who belonged to the choir ( Nehemiah 12:8;  Nehemiah 12:24).
