Audenaerd (Or Oudenaerde), Robert Van,
a Flemish painter and engraver, was born at Ghent in 1663, and died there. in 1743. He studied. first under Francis van Mierhop, and subsequently with John Cleef. When quite young he visited Rome, and studied with Carlo Maratti, under whose instruction he became a reputable historical painter. He painted several pictures for the churches of Ghent, among which is the great altar-piece in the Church of the Carthusians, representing St. Peter appearing to the monks of that order, considered his best work. In the Church of St. James is a picture of St. Catharine Refusing to Worship the False Gods.
