(1): ( n.) A plane figure having four angles, and consequently four sides; any figure having four angles.

(2): ( n.) A square or quadrangular space or inclosure, such a space or court surrounded by buildings, esp. such a court in a college or public school in England.

Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological and Ecclesiastical Literature

is an architectural term used to describe a square or court surrounded by buildings. The buildings of monasteries were generally arranged in quadrangles. (See Quadratum).
