a French Jesuit and traveller, was born at Saint-Quentin, Oct. 29, 1682. He embarked at La Rochelle in July, 1720, for the missions at Canada-n; arrived at Quebec towards the end of September; went up the St. Lawrence river; made an excursion to Illinois, and descended the Mississippi River as far. as its mouth, with the intention of going thence to St. Domingo; but his vessel was wrecked at the entrance to the Bahama Channel. He reached St. Domingo on a second voyage, in 1722, and returned to France in December of the same year.
