(n.) A celebrated marble temple of Athene, on the Acropolis at Athens. It was of the pure Doric order, and has had an important influence on art.

is the temple which the Greeks dedicated at Athens to Minerva (q.v.). It is one of the most celebrated of the Greek temples, and is usually regarded as one of the most perfect specimens a Greek architecture. Many of the sculptures have been removed from the Parthenon in modern times, and the different capitals of Europe highly prize the secured relics from this historic place. (See Athens).

A celebrated temple of the Doric order at Athens, dedicated to Athena, and constructed under Phidias of the marble of Pentelicus, and regarded as the finest specimen of Greek architecture that exists; it is 228 ft. in length and 64 ft. in height. Parthenon means the chamber of the maiden goddess, that is, Athena.
