Oscar Carter [1]
a Methodist Episcopal minister, was a slave in Tennessee till the emancipation proclamation by president Lincoln. He served two or more years in the Union army, and afterwards took up his residence at Vicksburg, Miss., where he joined the Church, and received license to exhort and to preach. In 1872 he was ordained deacon in the Mississippi Conference, and in the following year was sent to Forest Station, where he remained until his death, by assassination, in November, 1875, being about thirty-five years of age.
