Leopold Schmid [1]

a professor of philosophy, who died at Giessen, December 20, 1869, was originally a Roman Catholic divine, and occupied the theological chair at Giessen from 1839 to 1849. In the latter year he was elected bishop by the Mayence chapter, but the papal see did not acknowledge the election. Schmid resigned his position as theological professor, accepted a position in the philosophical faculty, and in 1867 publicly left the Church of Rome, and published Ultramontan, etc. Of his writings we also mention, Erkllrung der Genesis (Giessen, 1835): Grundzuge der Einleitung in die Philosophie (1860).
