John Lovejoy Abbot
John Lovejoy Abbot [1]
a Unitarian minister, was born at Andover, Mass., Nov. 29, 1783. He prepared for college at Phillips Academy, Andover; entered Harvard in 1801, and graduated in 1805. He then returned to his father's, and commenced the study of theology under the Rev. Jonathan French, the minister of the congregation in that place. In a short time, however, he went back to Cambridge, and was employed, as a subordinate officer of the college, at the same time pursuing his theological studies under Dr. Ware, professor of theology. In 1811 he was appointed librarian of the college and held the office two years. He was licensed to preach in 1808; and, during his residence at Cambridge, preached at various places: in the neighboring parishes. He was ordained and installed pastor of the First Church in Boston July 14, 1813. His health began to fail him while here, and he was obliged to take a voyage for his recovery. He passed the following summer in Brighton, near Boston, from there he went to Medford; and,. finally, in reduced health, returned to his father's in Andover, where he died, Oct. 17, 1814.
