John Gregory
Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological and Ecclesiastical Literature [1]
an English churchman of the 17th century, was born of humble parents at Amershaim, Buckinghamshire, November 10, 1607. He was educated at Christ Church College, Oxford, where for many years: he studied sixteen hours a day. He became an exquisite linguist and general scholar, his modesty setting the greater lustre to his learning. He wrote notes on Dr. Ridley's book of Civil and Ecclesiastical Law. He was chaplain of Christ Church, and was thence preferred prebendary of Chichester and Sarum. He died at Kidlington, Oxfordshire, in 1646. Grandson of James, born at Aberdeen, where he became professor of Medicine in 1755, whence ten years later he was translated to fill the corresponding chair in Edinburgh; his works include, among others, "A Comparative View of the State and Faculties of Man with those of the Animal World" (1724-1773).
