John Collins [1]
a minister of the Society of Friends, was born at Charlestown, R.I., December 12, 1716, his father being also, a minister in the same denomination. He became an eminent preacher among the Friends, and for many years sat at the head of the New England Yearly Meeting. He had a thorough acquaintance with the disciplinary affairs of the society, and "was much engaged, and took much pains, in endeavoring to have the Africans or negroes freed from slavery, and often testified against that wicked practice."
