Jehon'athan. (Whom Jehovah Gave).

1. Son of Uzziah; superintendent of certain of King David's storehouses.  1 Chronicles 27:25. (B.C. 1014).

2. One of the Levites, who were sent by Jehoshaphat, through the cities of Judah, with a book of the law, to teach the people.  2 Chronicles 17:8. (B.C. 910).

3. A priest,  Nehemiah 12:18, the representative of the family of Shemaiah,  Nehemiah 12:6, when Joiakim was high priest. (B.C. after 536).

Jehonathan . A more exact rendering of the name usually represented in English as Jonathan . In RV [Note: Revised Version.] this form occurs twice. 1.   2 Chronicles 17:8 one of the Levites sent out by Jehoshaphat with the Book of the Law to teach the people in the cities of Judah. 2.  Nehemiah 12:18  Nehemiah 12:18 the head of the priestly family of Shemaiah in the days of Joiakim the son of Jeshua.

    (Heb. Yehonathan', יְהוֹנָתָן , Jehovah Given; Sept. Ι᾿Ωνάθαν ), the full form of the name of four men.

    1. The oldest son of king Saul ( 1 Samuel 14:6;  1 Samuel 14:8;  1 Samuel 14:21;  1 Samuel 18:1;  1 Samuel 18:3-4;  1 Samuel 19:2;  1 Samuel 19:4;  1 Samuel 19:6-7; 1 Samuel 20 throughout and all later passages except  1 Chronicles 10:2, in all which the A.V. has JONATHAN (See Jonathan) [q.v.], as the Hebrew likewise elsewhere has).

    2. Son of Uzziah and superintendent of certain of king David's storehouses ( אֹצָרוֹת , the word rendered "treasures" earlier in the verse and in 27, 28 "cellars") ( 1 Chronicles 27:25). B.C. 1014.

    3. One of the Levites who were sent by Jehoshaphat through the cities of Judah, with a book of the Law, to teach the people ( 2 Chronicles 17:8). B.C. 910.

    4. A priest ( Nehemiah 12:18), and the representative of the family of Shemaiah ( Nehemiah 12:6) when Joiakim was high priest that is, in the next generation after the return from Babylon under Zerubbabel and Jeshua. B.C. post 536.

    jē̇ - hon´a - than ( יהונתן , yehōnāthān , "Yahweh has given"): The name is the same as Jonathan: the Hebrew has the two forms for the same person sometimes; sometimes only one is found. See Jonathan . The form "Jehonathan" occurs as follows in English Versions of the Bible:

    (1) A L evite who took part in teaching the Torah in the cities of Judah under Jehoshaphat ( 2 Chronicles 17:8 English Versions of the Bible and Hebrew).

    (2) Head of the priestly family of Shemaiah ( Nehemiah 12:18 English Versions of the Bible and Hebrew).

    (3) The King James Version and Hebrew in  1 Chronicles 27:25; see Jonathan , (7).
