James Peddie [1]
an able and judicious English divine, was born at Perth in 1759. He entered the University of Edinburgh in 1775; was admitted a student in the divinity hall of the Secession Church, under the Rev. John Brown, of Haddington, in 1777; was ordained minister of Bristo Street congregation, Edinburgh, in 1783, and continued in that charge until his death in 1845. His sermons are eminently clear, well arranged, scriptural, and instructive. In expository lectures he greatly excelled. He published, The Revolution the Work of God, and a Cause of Joy; two sermons on Psalms 136:6 [Nov. 5] (Edinb. 1789, 8vo): — The Perpetuity, Advantages, And Universality Of The Christian Religion; a sermon preached before the Edinburgh Missionary Society on Psalms 72:17 (ibid. 1796, 8vo): — Jehovah'S Care To Perpetuate The Redeemer'S Name; a sermon preached before the Missionary Society on Psalms 45:17 (Loud. 1809, 8vo): — A Practical Exposition Of The Book Of Jonah, In Ten Lectures (Edinb. 1842, 12mo). After his death appeared Discourses, With A Memoir Of His Life, by his son, the Rev. William Peddie, D.D. (ibid. 1846, 8vo).
