Iturea

A region in the extreme northeast of Palestine, perpetuating the name of Jetur a son of Ishmael, and belonging to the half-tribe of Manasseh, 1 Chronicles 1:31; 5:19 . The name of Jedur still remains there. In the time of Christ, Iturea was in the tetrarchy of Philip, Luke 3:1 . It lay about midway between the Sea of Galilee and Damascus, but its limits are not well known. Its inhabitants are said to have been skillful archers and dexterous robbers.

The region of Iturea lay between the Sea of Galilee and Damascus, and in early New Testament times was governed by Herod Philip, a son of Herod the Great ( Luke 3:1; see Herod ). It was on the edge of the tableland region formerly called Bashan ( Numbers 21:33; Psalms 22:12; see Bashan ).
