Helez

Hastings' Dictionary of the Bible [1]

HELEZ. 1. One of David’s thirty heroes (  2 Samuel 23:26 ). He is described as ‘the Paltite ,’ i.e. a native of Beth-pelet in the Negeb of Judah (cf.   Joshua 15:27 ,   Nehemiah 11:26 ). But in the two parallel lists (  1 Chronicles 11:27;   1 Chronicles 27:10 ) both the Hebrew text and the LXX [Note: Septuagint.] read ‘the Pelonite .’ The former reading is further inconsistent with   1 Chronicles 27:10 , where Helez is expressly designated as ‘of the children of Ephraim.’ He was in command of the military guard appointed for the seventh monthly course of the Temple service. See Pelonite. 2 . A Judahite (  1 Chronicles 2:39 ).
