HELDAI. 1. The captain of the military guard appointed for the twelfth monthly course of the Temple service (  1 Chronicles 27:15 ). He is probably to be identified with ‘ Heleb the son of Baanah the Netophathite,’ one of David’s thirty heroes (  2 Samuel 23:29 ). In the parallel list (  1 Chronicles 11:30 ) the name is more correctly given as Heled . The form Heldai is supported by   Zechariah 6:10 , and should probably be restored in the other two passages. 2. According to   Zechariah 6:10 , one of a small band who brought gifts of gold and silver from Babylon to those of the exiles who had returned under Zerubbabel. From these gifts Zechariah was told to make a crown for Joshua the high priest, which was to be placed in the Temple as a memorial of Heldai and his companions. In v. 14 Helem is clearly an error for Heldai.

2. A Jew from Babylon, from whom and Tobijah and Jedaiah the gold and silver which they presented toward building the temple were to be taken, and crowns made for Joshua's head, afterward to be deposited in the temple as a memorial of the donors (as Cornelius' prayers and ahns of faith "came up for a memorial before God,"  Acts 10:4), until Messiah should come. Heldai means "robust"; called also Helem ( Zechariah 6:10;  Zechariah 6:14).

2. One who returned from exile,  Zechariah 6:10 (probably the same as HELEMin   Zechariah 6:14 ), who apparently had gold and silver of which crowns were made, to be 'for a memorial in the temple of the Lord.'

(Heb. Chelday', חֶלְדִי , Worldly; Sept. Χολδαϊ v, but Οἱ Ἄρχοντες in  Zechariah 6:10; Vulg. Holdai), the name of two men.

1. A Netophathite and descendant of Othniel, chief of the twelfth division (24,000) of David's forces ( 1 Chronicles 27:15). B.C. 1014. In  1 Chronicles 11:30 (where he is called HELED) his father's name is said to be Baanahb; and in the parallel passage ( 2 Samuel 23:29) he is called HELEB.

2. One of those lately returned from the Captivity whom the prophet Zechariah was directed to take with him when he went to crown the high- priest Joshua, as a symbol of the future Messiah's advent ( Zechariah 6:10). B.C. 520. In  Zechariah 6:14 the name is written HELEM.

hel´dā̇ - ı̄ ( הלדּי , ḥelday ):

(1) A captain of the temple-service, appointed for the 12th month ( 1 Chronicles 27:15 ). Same as Heled (חלד , ḥēledh ) in parallel list (compare  1 Chronicles 11:30 ), and is probably also to be identified with Heleb, son of Baanah the Metophathite, one of David's heroic leaders ( 2 Samuel 23:29 ).

(2) One of a company of Jews who brought gifts of gold and silver from Babylon to assist the exiles under Zerubbabel ( Zechariah 6:10 ).
