A hill near Jerusalem ( Jeremiah 31:39 ), probably the hill of lepers, and consequently a place outside the boundary of the city.

2. The hill near Jerusalem ( Jeremiah 31:39). From Hebrew Gaarab "to scrape," Syriac, leprosy, the locality outside the city to which lepers were removed, on the N.W. side of the city, W. of the valley of Gihon. Even the localities whose name implies they are now outside shall at last be taken within the new Jerusalem ( Matthew 8:14;  Luke 17:11-19).

The word means a pitcher. It was a hill near Jerusalem. (See  Jeremiah 31:39) If this hill was, as it is said to have been, three miles distant from Jerusalem, it serves to give a beautiful idea of the future extensiveness of the holy city. (See  Ezekiel 40:1-49 etc  Zechariah 2:1-13 etc.  Revelation 21:10-27)

Gareb 1 . One of David’s ‘Thirty’ (  2 Samuel 23:38 ,   1 Chronicles 11:40 ). 2 . A hill near Jerusalem (  Jeremiah 31:39 ). Its situation is uncertain, being located by some to the S. W., while others place it to the N., of the capital. At the present day there is a Wady Gourab to the W. of Jerusalem.

(Heb. Gareb', גָּרֵב , Scabby; Sept. Γαρέβ and Γαρήβ ) , the name of a man and of a hill.

1. An Ithrite (q.v.), i.e., descendant of Jethro or Jether, and one of David's thirty heroes ( 2 Samuel 23:38;  1 Chronicles 11:40). B.C. 1046. (See David).

2. A hill ( גִּבְעָה ) near Jerusalem, apparently on the north-west, ( Jeremiah 31:39). (See Jerusalem). According to Dr. Barclay, it is "the ridge running from the north-west corner of the city in the direction of Wely Kamat" (City Of The Great King, page 76). (See Gath). He thinks it may have been so called because Gareb the Ithrite once owned it, or because it contained quarries for the seclusion of the lepers.

gā´reb ( גּרב , gārēbh ): One of David's "mighty men of the armies" (  2 Samuel 23:38;  1 Chronicles 11:40 ), an "Ithrite," i.e. a member of one of the families of Kiriath-jearim ( 1 Chronicles 2:53 ). Some, however, read ha - yattirı̄ for , ha - yithrı̄ , thus making him a native of Jattir. See Ira .
