Name given by Jacob to the place of the altar which he built at Beth-el to God who appeared to him when he fled from Esau. Beth-el signifies 'House of God,' and on his return to that place he received the revelation of God's name, Almighty (compare  Genesis 32:29 ), and worshipped the 'God of Beth-el,' "because there God appeared unto him, when he fled from the face of his brother."  Genesis 35:7 .

El-beth'el. (the God of Bethel). The name which Jacob is said to have bestowed on the place, at which God appeared to him, when he was flying from Esau.  Genesis 35:7.
