Bertel (Or Bertels) Jean

a Flemish theologian and chronicler, was born at Louvain in 1559. At the age of seventeen he assumed the Benedictine garb at Luxemburg, and was for nineteen years abbot of the monastery. In 1594 he was transferred to the Abbey of Echternach. The Dutch made him prisoner in 1596, and a large consideration was required to obtain his release. He died at the Abbey of Echternach, June 19, 1607, leaving, In Regulam D. Benedicti Diavolgi Viginti sex: Catalogus et Series Abbatum Exteracensium (d'Echternach) (Cologne, 1581). See Hoefer, Nouv.
