Benger Johann Michael [1]

a Roman Catholic theologian of Germany, was born in 1823 at Bockum, near Crefeld. In 1845 he was made priest and chaplain at Erkelenz; in 1847 he was appointed cathedral vicar and secretary to the archbishop Geissel at Cologne, and in 1848 professor at the clerical seminary there. In 1854 he joined the Congregation of the Holy Redeemer at Altotting, whose leader he became. He died Feb. 27, 1870, at Vilsbiburg, in Lower Bavaria, as rector of the Redemptorists. He wrote, Pastoraltheologie (Regensburg, 1861-63, 3 vols.): Compendium der Pastoraltheologie (ibid. 1868). See Literarischer Handweiser fur das kathol.
