Beb'a-i. (Fatherly).

1. "Sons of Bebai," 623  Nehemiah 6:28 in number, returned from Babylon with Zerubbabel,  Deuteronomy 2:11;  Nehemiah 7:16. (B.C. 536), and at a later period, twenty-eight more, under Zechariah, son of Bebai, returned with Ezra.  Ezra 8:11. Four of this family had taken foreign wives.  Ezra 10:28. The name occurs also among those who sealed the covenant.  Nehemiah 10:15.

2. Father of Zechariah, who was the leader of the twenty-eight men of his tribe mentioned above.

the name of one or two men, and a place. 1. (Heb. Bebay', בֵּבִי , from the Pehlvi bab, father;

1. Sept. Βαβαϊ v, Βηβαϊ v, Βαβί , and Βηβι ), the head of one of the families that returned from Babylon with Zerubbabel (B.C. 536) to the number of 623 ( Ezra 2:11;  1 Esdras 5:13), or 628 by a different mode of reckoning ( Nehemiah 7:16), of whom his son Zechariah, with 28 males, returned (B.C. 459) under Ezra ( Ezra 8:11;  1 Esdras 8:37). Several other of his sons are mentioned in chap. 10:28. He (if the same) subscribed to the sacred covenant with Nehemiah ( Ezra 10:15). B.C. 410. Four of this family had taken foreign wives ( Nehemiah 10:28;  1 Esdras 9:29).

2. (Alex. Βηβαί , Vat. omits; Vulg. omits). A place named only in  Judith 15:4. It is, perhaps, a mere repetition of the name CHOBAI (See Chobai) (q.v.), occurring next to it.

bē´bā̇ - ı̄ , beb´a - ı̄ ( בּבי , bēbhay  ; Septuagint Βηβαί , Bēbaı́ , "fatherly"):

(1) Descendants of B: returned with Ezra to Jerusalem ( Ezra 8:11 called Babi; 1 Esdras 8:37); one of these is Zechariah, the son of Bebai (  Ezra 8:11 , Zaeharias; 1 Esdras 8:37). 623 returned with Zerubbabel to Jerusalem ( Ezra 2:11; 1 Esdras 5:13;  Nehemiah 7:16 gives the number 628); some of these had married "strange wives" (  Ezra 10:28; 1 Esdras 9:29).

(2) A chief of the people who sealed the covenant with Nehemiah ( Nehemiah 10:15 ).
