Archbishop Of Rheims Adalberon [1]
was one of the most learned prelates of the 10th century. Having obtained the archbishopric in 969, he called several councils for: the establishment - of ecclesiastical discipline. He also induced men of learning to resort to Rheims, and gave a high renown to the schools there. He was the son of Geoffrey, count of Ardenna, and distinguished himself as prelate and as minister under Lothaire and Louis V. In 987 he consecrated Huglu' Capet, who succeeded him in the office of grand-chancellor of France. He died Jan. 5, 988. The cathedral of Rheims is indebted to him for most of its sumptuous furniture.
