oldest son of a general in the East India Company's service, was born in George Street, Edinburgh, June 30, 1797, and received his bachelor's degree at Oxford in 1819. Between 1822 and 1825 he served two curacies, and died May 9, 1869. His publications were chiefly in the line of literary criticism. Besides editions of Greene, Webster, Shirley, Middleton, Skelton, Beaumont and Fletcher, Marlowe, Peele, Bentley, Collins, Pope, Akenside, Beattie, and others, he published a new and complete edition of the Works of William Shakespeare (185358, 6 volumes, 8vo). An English literary editor and historian, born in Edinburgh; edited several of the old English poets and authors, some of them little known before; also the poems of Shakespeare, Pope, &c.; was one of the founders of the Percy Society, for the publication of old English works (1798-1869).
