the ordinary numeral adverb signifying twice, is rendered "again" in Philippians 4:16 , "ye sent once and again unto my need," and in 1—Thessalonians 2:18 , where Paul states that he would have come to the Thessalonians "once and again," that is, twice at least he had attempted to do so. See Twice.
the regular word for "again," is used chiefly in two senses, (a) with reference to repeated action; (b) rhetorically, in the sense of "moreover" or "further," indicating a statement to be added in the course of an argument, e.g., Matthew 5:33; or with the meaning "on the other hand, in turn," Luke 6:43; 1—Corinthians 12:21; 2—Corinthians 10:7; 1—John 2:8 . In Hebrews 1:5 palin simply introduces an additional quotation; in Hebrews 1:6 this is not so. There the RV rightly puts the word "again" in connection with "He bringeth in the firstborn into the world," "When He again bringeth, etc." That is to say, palin is here set in contrast to the time when God first brought His Son into the world. This statement, then, refers to the future second advent of Christ. The word is used far more frequently in the Gospel of John than in any other book in the New Testament.

2. It notes something further, or additional to one or more particulars.
For to which of the angels said he at any time, thou art my son, this day have I begotten thee? and again, I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son? and again, let all the angels of God worship him. Hebrews 1 .
All the uses of this word carry in them the ideas of return or repetition as in these phrases give it back again give him as much again, that is, the same quantity once more or repeated.
There is not, in the world again, such a commerce as in London.

AGAIN . The Eng. word ‘again’ means in AV [Note: Authorized Version.] either ‘a second time,’ as Philippians 4:16 , ‘ye sent once and again’; or ‘back,’ as in Matthew 11:4 ‘go and show John again those things which ye do hear’ ( i.e. ‘go back and show John’).

a - gen ´: Advb. denoting repetition; in New Testament, generally for πάλιν , pálı̄n , "back," "once more." Occasionally, it has the force of a connective, synonymous with "moreover," as in Romans 15:10; 1 Corinthians 3:20 , etc. The expression "born again" of the King James Version, John 3:3 , John 3:7; 1 Peter 1:23 , translating the Greek " ánōthen ̌ " and " aná ̌ " in composition, becomes in the Revised Version (British and American) " anew ," i.e. "over again." As these particles mean "from above" and "up," their use as indicating repetition is sometimes disputed, but without further foundation than that "again" does not exhaust the meaning.
