The Nuttall Encyclopedia [1]

Poet and essayist, born in London; a contemporary of Milton, whom he at one time outshone, but has now fallen into neglect; he was an ardent royalist, and catered to the taste of the court, which, however, brought him no preferment at the Restoration; he was a master of prose, and specially excelled in letter-writing; he does not seem to have added much to the literature of England, except as an essayist, and in this capacity has been placed at the head of those who cultivated that clear, easy, and natural style which culminated in Addison (1618-1667).

Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological and Ecclesiastical Literature [2]

an English poet, was born in London in 1618, and educated at Westminster School, and Trinity College, Cambridge. In 1643 he was compelled to retire to Oxford on account of his royalistic sentiments, and afterwards left England for ten years, and spent the rest of his life in studious retirement. He died at Chertsey, July 28, 1667. Besides, some scientific and philosophical treatises, he published many poems, which, however, are now little valued.
