ARCHIVES . The ‘house of the archives’ ( Ezra 6:1 RV [Note: Revised Version.]; AV [Note: Authorized Version.] ‘rolls’) was a part of the ‘treasure house’ ( Ezra 5:17 ) of the Persian kings at Babylon, in which important State documents were preserved.

ar´kı̄vs (the more correct the Revised Version (British and American) rendition of בּית ספריּא , bēth ṣiphrayyā' , in Ezra 6:1 , "house of the archives" instead of "house of rolls" as in the King James Version): A part of the royal treasure-house ( James 5:17 ), in which important state documents were kept.
