Smith's Bible Dictionary [1]

Al'lon. (An Oak).

1. A Simeonite, ancestor of Ziza, a prince of his tribe in the reign of Hezekiah  1 Chronicles 4:37. (B.C. 727).

A large strong tree of some descriptio, probably an oak.

2. Allon , more accurately Elon , a place named among the cities of Naphtali.  Joshua 19:33. Probably the more correct construction, is to take it with the following word, that is, "The Oak By Zaanannim". See Elon .

2. Allon Bachuth. (Oak Of Weeping). The tree under which Rebekah's nurse, Deborah, was buried.  Genesis 35:8.

Easton's Bible Dictionary [2]

  • The son of Jedaiah, of the family of the Simeonites, who expelled the Hamites from the valley of Gedor ( 1 Chronicles 4:37 ).

  • Fausset's Bible Dictionary [3]

    ("oak".)

    1. ALLON or ELON, a city of Naphtali ( Joshua 19:33); others translate "the oak by Zaanaim" or "the oak of the loading of tents" (compare  Judges 4:11), "the plain of Zaanaim The Swamp, Ewald by Kedesh."

    2. Allon Bachuth "the oak of weeping," namely, for Deborah, Rebekah's nurse: corrupted into Tabor ( 1 Samuel 10:3; compare  Judges 4:5).

    Morrish Bible Dictionary [4]

The word allon is held to signify a strong and hardy tree, especially 'the oak,' as the word is translated in several passages.

    1. Place in Naphtali,  Joshua 19:33; or perhaps it may read, 'from the oak at Zaanannim,' referring to some well-known old tree.

    2. Chief of a family descended from Simeon.  1 Chronicles 4:37 .

Hastings' Dictionary of the Bible [5]

    ALLON . 1 . The head of a family of ‘Solomon’s servants’ ( 1Es 5:34 ). He may be the same as Ami (  Ezra 2:57 ), or Amon (  Nehemiah 7:59 ). 2 . A Simeonite prince (  1 Chronicles 4:37 ).

    Webster's Dictionary [6]

(n.) A measure of capacity, containing four quarts; - used, for the most part, in liquid measure, but sometimes in dry measure.

    Holman Bible Dictionary [7]

     1 Chronicles 4:37

Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological and Ecclesiastical Literature [8]

(Hebrew Allon', אִלּוֹן , Oak, as often), the name of a place and of a man. (See Allon-Bachuth); (See Oak).

    1. A town on the border of Naphtali, according to the Auth. Vers., between Heleph and Zaanannim ( Joshua 19:33); but perhaps rather designating only some remarkable tree as a landmark near the latter place ( מֵאִלּוֹן בְּצִעֲנִנִּים [v. r. מֵאֵלוֹן ] וִיְהִי גְבוּלָם מֵחֶל , And Their Border Ran From Cheleph, thence from the Oak that is By Zaanannim; Vulg. Et Coepit Terminus De Heleph, Et Elon In Saanim; Sept. Καὶ Ἐγενήθη Τὰ Ὅρια Αὐτῶν Μεέλεφ Καὶ Μαηλὼν Καὶ Σεεννανίμ ) , q. d. Allon- Zaanaim, i e. "the oak of Zaanaim" (since the enumeration in  Joshua 19:38 requires the union of these names as of one place), or "the oak of the loading of tents," as if deriving its name from some nomad tribe frequenting the spot (Stanley, Palest. p. 340 note). See ZAANAIM. Such a tribe were the Kenites, and in connection with them the place is again named in  Judges 4:11, with the additional definition of "by Kedesh (Naphtali"). Here, however, the Auth. Vers. following the Vulgate, renders the words "the plain of Zaanaim."

In  Joshua 19:33, אִלּוֹן , Allon, is the reading of V. d. Hooght, and of Walton's Polyglott; but most MSS. have אֵלוֹן , Elon (Davidson's Hebr. Text, p. 46). In  Judges 4:11, the Targum Jonathan renders "the plain of the swamp" (see Schwarz, Palest. p. 181). This is Ewald's explanation also (Gesch. Isr. 2, 492 note). For other interpretations, see Furst (Heb. Handw. p. 91). In  Genesis 35:8, the Sam. Version, according to its customary rendering of Allon, has משור בכיתה , "the Plain of Bakith." See more fully under ELON.

    2. (Sept. Ἀλλών v. r. Ἀλών .) The son of Jedaiah and father of Shiphi, chief Simeonites, of the family of those who expelled the Hamites from the valley of Gedor ( 1 Chronicles 4:37). B.C. apparently considerably ante 711.

    International Standard Bible Encyclopedia [9]

    al´on ( אלּון , 'allōn , "oak"):

    (1) A town in the tribe of Naphtali in northern Palestine ( Joshua 19:33 ), according to the King James Version, which follows some Hebrew texts. It is better however to read with the Revised Version (British and American), "oak" (אלון , 'ēlōn ), rather than as proper noun.

    (2) A prominent descendant of the tribe of Simeon ( 1 Chronicles 4:37 ).

    (3) The Revised Version (British and American) for Allom of the King James Version in 1 Esdras 5:34 (which see).
