S. of Judah ( Joshua 15:30). Perhaps the same as Bethul, of Simeon, within Judah's inheritance, or Bethuel ( Joshua 19:4;  1 Chronicles 4:30;  1 Samuel 30:27), "Bethel" among the cities of the extreme S.

Chesil (  Joshua 15:30 ). The Lxx [Note: Septuagint.] reads Bethel , probably for Bethul , as in the parallel passage,   Joshua 19:4 , and Chesil of Mt [Note: Massoretic Text.] is prob. a textual error.

Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological and Ecclesiastical Literature

(Hebrews Kesil´, כְּסַיל, a fool, i.e. profane, as in  Psalms 49:11, and elsewhere; Sept. Χεσίλ v. r. Χασείρ and Βαιθήλ; Vulg. Cesil), a town in the extreme south of Palestine, named between Eltolad and Hormah ( Joshua 15:30). In the list of towns given out of Judah to Simeon, the name Bethul (See Bethul) (q.v.) occurs in place of it ( Joshua 19:4), as if the one were identical with, or a corruption of, the other. This is confirmed by the reading of  1 Chronicles 4:30, Bethuel; by that of the Sept. as given above, and by the mention in  1 Samuel 30:27, of a Bethel among the cities of the extreme south. It is merely mentioned by Eusebius and Jerome in the Onomasticon (s.v. Χοιλή, Chisil). (See Urion).

kē´sil , kes´il ( כּסיל , keṣı̄l  ; A, Χασείρ , Chaseı́r ): A town in the extreme South of Judah named with Eltolad, Hormah and Ziklag ( Joshua 15:30 ). The name does not occur again. In  Joshua 19:4 it is replaced by Bethul (Septuagint Βαιθήλ , Baithḗl ), and in  1 Chronicles 4:30 by Bethuel. "Chesil" may have arisen from a misreading of the text.
