ARBITE . The LXX [Note: Septuagint.] ( 2 Samuel 23:35 ) apparently reads ‘the Archite,’ cf. Joshua 16:2 and ‘Hushai the Archite,’ 2 Samuel 15:32; but a place ‘Arab. [Note: Arabic.] , in the S. of Judah, is mentioned Joshua 15:52 . In the parallel passage 1 Chronicles 11:37 we find ‘the son of Ezhai,’ a reading which is supported by several MSS of the LXX [Note: Septuagint.] in 2Sam. l.c. , and is probably correct.

ar´bı̄t ( האובּי , hā - 'arbı̄ ): The Arbite or perhaps an inhabitant of Arabia in southern Judah ( Joshua 15:52 ). The epithet is used in connection with one of David's mighty men in 2 Samuel 23:35; where Paarai the Arbite occurs. In the parallel list ( 1 Chronicles 11:37 ) we have Naarai the son of Ezbai.

(Heb. Arbi', אִרְבִּי, Sept. Ἀρβί ), an epithet of Paarai or Naarai, one of David's warriors ( 2 Samuel 23:35; comp. 1 Chronicles 11:37), probably as being a native of the town ARAB (See Arab) ( Joshua 15:52). In the list of Chronicles it is given as Ben-Ezbai, by a change in letters not unfrequently occurring. (See Ezbai). (See Kennicott, Dissert. on 2 Samuel 23, p. 210.)
