Theseus Ambrosius [1]

(Ital. Teseo Ambrogio), an Italian Orientalist, was born in 1469. He is said to have understood eighteen languages, especially the Syriac. At the order of pope Leo X, he opened a school for the Chaldee and Syriac languages at Bologna. He died in the Monastery of St. Peter at Pavia in 1540. He wrote, Introductio in Chaldaicam Linguam, Syriacam atque Armenicam et decem alias Linguas (Pavia, 1539).
