In 1812 he gained the first prize of the [[Academy]] for his picture of [[Ulysses]] [[Slaying]] the Suitors of Penelope, which entitled him to go to Rome on a pension from the government. At Rome he painted several classical subjects, and the [[Flagellation]] of Christ, which was especially commended. After his return to Paris, he exhibited, in 1819, in the Louvre. St. Peter Curing the Lame Man; [[Tobit]] Restoring Sight to his Father; A [[Shepherd]] in Repose; [[Preaching]] at [[Night]] in Rome, and other subjects, and obtained the gold medal of the first class.
