Hastings' Dictionary of the Bible [1]

Pharathon. Named, with Timnath and Tephon, among the cities which Bacchides ‘strengthened with high walls, with gates and with bars’ ( 1Ma 9:60 ). Some authorities read with Lxx [Note: Septuagint.] ‘Timnath-pharathon,’ as indicating one place. Conder suggests Fer‘on , about 15 miles W. of Nâhlus. This seems to be too far to the north, as the towns mentioned are all ‘in Jud¿a.’ It may possibly be Fer‘ata , 6 miles S.W. of Nâblus, although the same difficulty exists in a modified degree. Cf. Pirathon.

International Standard Bible Encyclopedia [2]

far´a - thon ( Φαραθών , Pharathṓn ): One of the strong cities of Judea fortified by Bacchides during the Maccabean war (  1 Maccabees 9:50 ). Septuagint reads "Thamnatha-pharathon" as the name of one city. Josephus, however ( Ant. , Xiii , i, 3), and Syriac supply the "and" between them. The name represents a Hebrew pir‛āthōn . If it is to be taken strictly as in Judean territory, it cannot be identified with Pirathon (which see) of  Judges 12:15 . In that case we should probably seek for it with Dr. G.A. Smith in some fortress covering the top of Wâdy Far‛ah .
