4. Of the sons of Asaph. Under the Spirit, who came upon him, he encouraged Jehoshaphat and the congregation of Judah in the house of the Lord, before the new court: "thus saith the Lord unto you, Be not ... dismayed by reason of this great multitude, for the battle is not yours but God's; tomorrow go ye down against them; behold they come up by the cliff of Ziz, and ye shall find them at the end of the brook (valley) before the wilderness of Jeruel, ye shall not need to fight ... stand ye still, and see the salvation of the Lord with you" ( 2 Chronicles 20:14;  Psalms 83:3-7). This psalm was composed by one of the sons "of Asaph," which Jahaziel was; he probably was its author. It is called: a "song" ( Shir ), a thanksgiving by anticipation for the victory. It was sung by the Levite Kohathites and Korhites. So, according to their faith, "when they began to sing and praise, the Lord set ambushments against Ammon, Moab, ... and they were smitten." The 47th Psalm was sung on the battlefield ( 2 Chronicles 20:26) after the victory, the 48th Psalm subsequently ( 2 Chronicles 20:28) in the temple.

Jaha'zi-el. (Whom God Watches Over).

1. One of the heroes of Benjamin, who joined David at Ziklag.  1 Chronicles 12:4. (B.C. 1055).

2. A priest, in the reign of David.  1 Chronicles 16:6.

3. A Kohathite Levite, third son of Hebron.  1 Chronicles 23:19;  1 Chronicles 24:23.

4. Son of Zechariah, a Levite of the Bene-Asaph, (that is, sons of Asaph), in the reign of Jehoshaphat.  2 Chronicles 20:14. (B.C. 896).

5. The "son of Jahaziel," was the chief of the Bene-Shecaniah, (that is, sons of Shecaniah), who returned from Babylon with Ezra.  Ezra 8:5. (B.C. before 459).

(Hebrew Yachaziel', יִחֲזַיאֵל , Beheld by God; Sept. Ι᾿Εζιήλ , Ι᾿Αζιήλ , Ο᾿Ζιήλ , Ἀζίήλ ), the name of five men. (See Jahzeel).

1. The third "son" of Hebron, the grandson of Levi through Kohath (1 Chronicles 23:19; 24:33). B.C. probably post 1618, perhaps 1014.

2. One of the Benjamite warriors who joined David at Ziklag ( 1 Chronicles 12:4). B.C. 1055.

3. One of the priests who preceded the sacred ark with trumpets on its removal to Jerusalem ( 1 Chronicles 16:6). B.C. cir. 1043.

4. The son of Zechariah, a Levite of the family- of Asaph, who predicted to Jehoshaphat his triumph over the host of the Moabites with such decided assurances. (See Jehosaphat). He is nowhere else mentioned in Scripture, but his prophecy on this occasion is given in full: "Then upon Jahaziel, the son of Zechariah, the son of Benaiah, the son of Jeiel, the son of Mattaniah, a Levite of the sons of Asaph, came the Spirit of the Lord in the midst of the congregation; and he said, Hearken ye, all Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem, and thou, king Jehoshaphat, thus saith the Lord unto you, Be not afraid nor dismayed by reason of this great multitude; for the battle is not yours, but God's. ‘ o-morrow go ye down against them: behold, they' come up by the cliff of Ziz; and ye shall find them at the end of the brook, before the wilderness of Jeruel. Ye shall not ‘ need to fight in this battle: set yourselves, stand ye still, and see the salvation of the Lord with you, O Judah and Jerusalem: fear not, nor be dismayed; to-morrow go out against them, for the Lord will be with you" ( 2 Chronicles 20:14-17). 5. One of the"sons" of Shechaniah, whose son (Ben-Jahaziel, but his name is not otherwise given; indeed, there is evidently some confusion in the text; comp.  2 Chronicles 20:3) is said to have returned from Babylon ‘ litl 300 males of his retainers ( Ezra 8:5). B.C. ante 459. (See Shechaniah).

ja - hā´zi - el ( יחזיאל , yaḥăzı̄'ēl , "God sees"):

(1) In  1 Chronicles 12:4 (Hebrew 5), one of David's recruits at Ziklag, a Benjamite or maybe a Judean.

(2) In  1 Chronicles 16:6 , one of two priests appointed by David to sound trumpets before the ark on its journey to Jerusalem. The Septuagint's Codex Vaticanus and Codex Alexandrinus, read "Uzziel."

(3) In  1 Chronicles 23:19;  1 Chronicles 24:23 , a Levite, "son" of Hebron, a Kohathite. Kittel, following the Septuagint, reads "Uzziel."

(4) In  2 Chronicles 20:14 , an Asaphite, son of Zechariah. He encouraged King Jehoshaphat of Judah and his subjects to fight against the Moabite and Ammonite invaders.

(5) In  Ezra 8:5 , an ancestor of one of the families of the Restoration. Read probably "of the sons of Zattu, Sheconiah the son of Jahaziel," following 1 Esdras 8:32 (= Jezelus).
