<p> a Methodist Episcopal minister, was born at Waterford, Vt., June 16, 1803. He began his [[Christian]] life at the age of ten; joined the New [[England]] [[Conference]] in 1828, and was immediately transferred to the [[Maine]] Conference. His latter years were spent laboring in the Provnidence Conference. He died in Marion, Mass., March 11, 1867. As a preacher, Mr. [[Alton]] was clear, methodical, instructive, earnest; as a pastor, devoted, zealous. See Minutes of Annual Conferences, 1867, p. 102. </p>
