It was besieged and taken by [[Judas]] Maccableus ( 1 [[Maccabees]] 5:26; 1 Maccabees 5:43-44). Under the name of CARNION ( τὸ Καρνίον ) the same occurrence is related in 2 Maccabees 12:21; 2 Maccabees 12:26, the temple being called the ATARGATEION ( τὸ Ἀταργατεῖον ) . This enables us to identify it with ASHTEROTH-KARNAIM (See [[Ashteroth-Karnaim]]) (q.v.). </p>
