In 1806 he entered the itinerant ministry in the South Carolina Conference, and in 1807 he organized the first Methodist [[Church]] in Savannah, Ga. In 1812 he was made presiding elder of [[Mississippi]] District, and was elected to the General Conference, in which body he served also at the session of 1844, at which the Church was divided on the slavery question. In 1846 he was made superannuate, and died July 8,1854. He was a very successful preacher, and one of the founders of [[Methodism]] in the Southern States.
