(דִּוָּג, davvag', Jeremiah 16:16 [marg.]; Ezekiel 47:10; or דִּיָּג, dayyag', Isaiah 19:8; Jeremiah 16:16 [text]; Gr. ἁλιεύς, seaman or sailor, hence fisherman, as rendered Luke 5:2), a term used, besides its literal import [(See Fishing), above], in the phrase "fishers of men" (Matthew 19:1; Mark i, 17), as applied by our Saviour to the apostles (q.v.) in calling them to their office; and in a like typical manner, but in an unfavorable sense, the word occurs Jeremiah 16:16.
